What changes are being implemented by Sustainable Transportation and Parking Services?

  • Lots will now be designated specifically to students, faculty/staff or visitors. View a list of the designations for each lot.
  • Student permits are available for purchase by semester only.
  • Student permits have been consolidated to include residence student classification. All students now fall under the same classification and can park in any student permit-designated lot.
  • Permit holders who need accessible parking will now be able to park in any accessible parking spot, provided they have a valid Ministry of Transportation accessibility permit and a U of G parking permit or have made another form of payment. This allows those with accessibility needs to park in the most convenient lot available for them. In the past students with accessibility permits were assigned to a specific lot.
  • Fines have increased and penalties made stricter to discourage people without an appropriate permit from parking in designated lots.
  • Students must have a valid license plate number and student number in order to purchase a permit.

When do these changes take effect?

The new parking regulations took effect May 1, 2019.

Why were these changes made?

Sustainable Transportation and Parking Services received feedback from permit holders that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find parking spaces on campus. With core lots usually reaching capacity by 9 a.m., permit holders would check multiple core lots before finding space in non-core lots.

By designating lots to students, faculty/staff and visitors, Sustainable Transportation and Parking Services hopes to make it easier for permit holders to find parking on campus. Now, instead of searching multiple lots for an available space, permit holders may proceed directly to the lots designated to them, which should have a greater number of available spaces. This type of designated-lot system has been employed successfully at similar universities.

What informed the decision to designate lots?

To develop the new parking strategy, Sustainable Transportation and Parking Services undertook a study to better understand how spaces were being used on campus. The study considered aspects such as the number of permit holders on campus part-time and how employee absences and vacation time affect capacity. They also collected information about other universities’ parking strategies.

Have prices changed for parking permits?

There are no increases to parking permit prices for 2019-2020.

How many parking spaces on campus are available for student permit holders?

Seven lots with a total of 2,045 spots are available for student permit holders.

Seventeen lots with a total of 1,997 parking spots are designated for faculty and staff permit holders.

How are the lots allocated?

A list of the designations for each lot is available on Sustainable Transportation and Parking Services’ website.

What if I don’t need a parking permit for the full semester?

Semester parking permits can be returned by the first of the month for a pro-rated refund. For example, if you purchase a fall semester pass and return it by Dec. 1, you will receive a refund for the month of December.

Where do students with accessibility needs park?

Permit holders who need accessible parking will now be able to park in any accessible parking spot, provided they have a valid Ministry of Transportation accessibility permit and a U of G parking permit or have made another form of payment. This allows those with accessibility needs to park in the most convenient lot available for them.

What about parking in the evening?

Parking is free after 5 p.m., allowing student permit holders to park in the most convenient lot for night classes. No matter what parking lot they are parked in, students can:

  • access our SafeWalk program

  • Push the SafeWalk button on any Emergency Pole and ask the Campus Community Police dispatcher for a SafeWalk
  • Push the SafeWalk button on any payphone on campus
  • use the personal safety tools in the SafeGryphon app (available from the App Store or Google Play) 
    • Friend Walk sends your location in real-time to a friend so they can watch you as you walk to your destination. It can trigger a call to emergency services if necessary.
    • Work Alone will automatically check in on you when you’re working alone and can automatically trigger a call to your emergency contact if you fail to check in at the allotted time.
    • the SafeGryphon app can also connect you to SafeWalk

What else is being done to address capacity issues?

Designating lots to specific permit types is just one step in addressing the parking capacity challenges at the University of Guelph.

Sustainable Transportation and Parking Services has increased fines and made penalties stricter for those who park in designated lots without a permit. This should help discourage people from parking in these lots without an appropriate permit. More information on fines and penalties is available on the department’s website.

The City of Guelph offers discounted bus passes for staff and faculty to encourage the use of public transportation.
